Is Bushinkai for you?
- Do you want self defence that is effective and realistic?
- Do you want a martial art that will help improve your fitness?
- Do you want to learn in a real martial arts Dojo?

- Do you want a system that is legitimately recognised?
- Do you want to one day be a blackbelt yourself?
- Do you want self defence that is effective not just sport?
Then you've come to the right place. Bushinkai places quality over quantity. We believe in teaching real, effective self defence to a small class of adults - beginners always welcome. We are not the biggest club, that's because we don't compromise our standards. Bushinkai is here to teach you and help you, not to take your money. We have no contracts, no monthly payments, no expensive merchandise. If you are interested please email kaicho@runbox.com or browse this site to read about our rich history and techniques.
Bushinkai Karate (Toshu Jutsu)
Bushinkai Karate is a complete system embracing strikes, locks, throws, weapons and more. A practical self defence system (Hakuda Kempo Toshu Jutsu) it is based on traditional Karate and Jujutsu. This is the ideal martial arts system for adults who want to get fit and learn to defend themselves. We teach traditional Okinawan and Chinese weapons in this class. Karate classes are Tuesday night 8:00-9:30pm at Van Dang Martial Arts, Manchester. email kaicho@runbox.com
Bushinkai Jujutsu (Nihon Jujutsu)
Bushinkai Jujutsu is a complete system including grappling, strikes, locks, throws, groundwork and many more skills. A practical self defence system it is based on traditional Aikjujutsu, Jujutsu and Kobujutsu. This an ideal martial arts system for adults who want to get fit and learn to defend themselves. We teach traditional Japanese weapons in this class. Jujutsu classes are Sunday night 7:00-8:30pm at Van Dang Martial Arts, Manchester. email kaicho@runbox.com
Bushinkai Tai Chi (Yang style Taijiquan)
Traditionally taught Yang style Tai Chi for health and self defence. We do not only teach health exercises of Tai Chi but a complete Kung Fu system that includes strikes, throws and weapons. Although the majority of the forms we teach were only formalised in Beijing in around 1956, they are part of the older Yang style of Taiji Quan. Our Tai Chi classes are Tuesday night 7:00-8:00 at Van Dang Martial Arts, Manchester. email simonkeegan@runbox.com
A few more things to know about Bushinkai
Bushinkai has been established for 12 years and we are part of a Governing Body called the United Kingdom Budo Federation (UKBF) which is in turn part on a network that has members in over a dozen countries. The UKBF was originally known as IMAF GB and was the official British member of Japan's oldest Budo fraternity the Kokusai Budoin (established in Tokyo in the 1950s). The UKBF has a special research organisation dedicated to Okinawan hoplology (that means the academic study of martial arts) called the International Toshu Jutsu Federation and as its Jujutsu division the British Jujutsu Federation. Our chief instructor was a regional director of IMAF and is now the international director of the UKBF. We are also allied with Shobukan Karate International and Shikon and part of the World Union of Karatedo Federations.

The Bushinkai Academy is headed by Simon Keegan who teaches Karate, Jujutsu and Tai Chi in Manchester; and his father Sifu David Keegan who teaches Tai Chi in the Wigan area. The family has a long tradition in the Okinawan, Japanese and Chinese martial arts. Bushinkai is an affiliate of Shobukan Karate headed by Shihan PAJ Handyside.
Bushinkai is affiliated to TEMAA (a multi-style national association founded in 1994) and the United Kingdom Budo Federation (formerly IMAF GB). Bushinkai is part of the UKBF's specialist Karate and Jujutsu divisions, the International Toshu Jutsu Federation and the British Jujutsu Federation. Bushinkai is also an affiliate of the Shobukan Karate Organisation (Est 1973) and the Shikon organisation.
Classes are held at Van Dang Martial Arts, England's premier martial arts venue for over 20 years. We have a well equipped modern Dojo for Karate and a traditional Chinese 'kwoon' for Tai Chi.
Hakuda Kempo Toshu Jutsu is our system - it is not a style - which seeks to teach the 'trunk' of martial arts rather than the 'branches.'
Some of the main influences on our system include Shoto Ryu, Shotokan, Goju Ryu as well as other martial arts like Aikijujutsu, Jujutsu and the Chinese martial arts.

Manchester martial arts classes for adults
Bushinkai is an alternative to what many Karate clubs offer. We are not a sporty kickboxing club nor are we a babysitting service. Our method of Karate (Hakuda Kempo Toshu Jutsu) was devised for adult students who want something more. Something realistic.
Following a fully methodical systemised way of teaching self defence called The Bushinkai Method we teach cutting edge self defence while at the same time honouring the ancient fighting traditions of Okinawa, Japan and China prior to the arts being watered down as sport. We teach traditional kata (some upto 400 years old)but we teach them in the context of their ability to impart real workable self defence practises.
For the last 12 years we have attracted many experienced elite martial artists (and complete beginners alike) who find our approach refreshing. In many ways we are both completely traditional yet completely modern. By that we mean we do not teach museum pieces, we teach tried and tested practises in their original combative context.
The Bushinkai Method of Karate uses the old name for Okinawa and South West Japan's fighting systems (Hakuda Kempo Toshu Jutsu) since it is the original no-nonsense fighting arts of these warrior people that we look to.

Manchester Karate classes
Our Karate method can be called by many different names - Shotokan, Shoto Ryu, Shobukan, Shorin Ryu, Shuri Te, but these names are not important since they are all branches of the same tree. In Bushinkai we teach not only the branches, but the trunk and the roots - this is Toshu Jutsu.
Shuri Te came to prominence in the mid 1800s as Sokon Matsumura pioneered the style. Then his student Itosu founded Shorin Ryu in around 1900 and again took the art forward. In around 1920 Funakoshi and Gima introduced the art to Japan as 'Shoto Ryu' and soon after the branches of Shotokan and Shotokai emerged.
In the 1960s, Shotokan spread throughout the world led by masters like Nakayama, Kanazawa and Enoeda.
In the 21st century Shotokan once again had renewed interest as Shotokan blackbelt Lyoto Machida won the UFC competition and showed the art's effectiveness in MMA.
